SAP S/4HANA is an innovative real-time ERP suite (enterprise resource planning) based on the leading in-memory computing platform SAP HANA. This enables extremely fast data processing and a standardized database with a simplified data model. Technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), big data, machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI) form the basis of this software. The solution covers all core processes in the functional areas of finance, production, plant management, R&D and design, sales, service, purchasing and procurement as well as supply chain.
Innovation cycles: An annual major release for on-premise systems provides the latest developments. Three Feature Pack Stacks (FPS), which contain new features and corrections, and Support Package Stacks (SPS) are made available on a quarterly basis.
SAP S/4HANA uses the HANA in-memory database. With this foundation, the new ERP system has taken a major step forward. SAP HANA organizes data using column storage, which means that indexes are not normally required. Tables are automatically compressed so that large amounts of data can be stored in the smallest possible space. The HANA database has a much larger main memory, powerful multi-core processors and optimized caching.
SAP S/4HANA can be operated both on-premise and in the cloud. A hybrid approach (e.g. critical business processes in the SAP S/4HANA on-premise system, standard processes in SAP S/4HANA Cloud) is also possible.
The usual licensing model applies to on-premise implementations. You have your own SAP system, which you can operate and modify yourself in a data center of your choice. You take responsibility for operation and maintenance.
With the SAP S/4HANA Private Cloud, you have the same range of functions as with the on-premise system. Technical conversions and brownfield migrations can be carried out. You can expand and modify your system and determine the timing of upgrades yourself.
The difference in detail: SAP S/4HANA Private Cloud is a Software-as-a-Service model (SaaS). Implementation, operation, maintenance and support are the responsibility of SAP and your SAP partner. You can operate the infrastructure with a hyperscaler of your choice. High initial investments are eliminated due to a monthly usage fee. Apart from this, SAP also offers the new, holistic “Rise with SAP” offering with the SAP S/4HANA Private Cloud as a component. This also includes, for example, SAP BTP, a platform for development and integration. The advantage: you only have one contract, even more cost savings and support from SAP and can focus entirely on using the system.
If you are already operating an SAP system, such as R/3 or SAP ECC 6.0, there are usually two ways to switch to SAP S/4HANA. With the greenfield approach (new implementation) or the brownfield approach (system conversion).
✓ If you want to keep your “digital core” clean, get rid of legacy issues and start afresh, the greenfield approach is ideal for the changeover. It is possible to take your own developments with you, but SAP does not recommend this.
✓ If you would like to convert your existing system to SAP S/4HANA and retain the majority of your data and in-house developments, the brownfield approach is an option.
In both cases, tools such as the SAP Readiness Check or Custom Code Analyzer provide a good overview of your current system and its compatibility with the new software. SAP Activate supports the project as a new implementation method with best practices, tools and instruments.
SAP Fiori is SAP’s current design approach, which was created specifically for SAP S/4HANA. The interface has been designed so that the user can work with the system in the best possible way and the SAP Fiori apps are basically arranged in tile groups. The user can personalize the layout of the start page by grouping, moving, removing, adding, deleting, renaming or rearranging tiles.
Additional apps for the respective software solution can be searched for and added in the SAP Fiori Apps Reference Library. The SAP GUI will continue to be supported for the SAP S/4HANA On-Premise Edition and can still be used alongside SAP Fiori applications. However, this is primarily only to make the transition to the new design easier for SAP customers who are familiar with this classic interface. In many cases, a single SAP Fiori app can replace many individual SAP GUI transactions.

SAP S/4HANA offers even more functions than the current version of the Business Suite. Nevertheless, S/4 is much easier and more intuitive to use. Thanks to the new SAP Fiori user interface, the system is similar to conventional apps. This means that experienced users can operate the system with virtually no training or help.
